According to a report from the Sun, Wolves are one of the number of clubs interested in signing SC Freiburg defender Robin Koch. The Wanderers’ Premier League rivals Leicester City and Norwich City have also been credited with an interest.
Robin Koch, 23, has emerged as one of the best young prospects in the German top-flight since moving from hometown club Kaiserslautern in 2017. The defender has played a key role in fourth-placed Freiburg’s impressive start to the Bundesliga season.
For his rock-solid performances in Freiburg’s defence, Koch was rewarded with his first Germany cap last month against Argentina before playing during the current international break. With the German centre-back impressing in the Bundesliga, Wolves must do everything to their powers to win Koch’s signature in January.
Wolves could benefit from recruiting a new defender as they have been conceding some cheap goals at the back this season. They have lost Willy Boly for a number of months with a fractured leg, while the likes of Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett haven’t been as effective as they were last season.
Real Madrid defender Jesus Vallejo joined the Wanderers on a season-long loan in the summer but has made just seven appearances in all competitions so far.
He has struggled to break into Nuno Espirito Santo’s starting XI. In recent weeks, manager Nuno Espirito Santo has opted to use the likes of Leander Dendoncker, Romain Saiss and even Matt Doherty at centre-half. That clearly tells Vallejo is far off from being a regular starter at Wolves.
And as per a report from Defense Central (h/t The Birmingham Mail), Real Madrid could recall Vallejo and send him elsewhere for the second half of the current season.
Should the Spaniard be recalled by the Los Blancos, Nuno will be left with limited options in central defence. Above all, with Boly sidelined for the next couple of months, the Wolves chief should make a move for Robin Koch in the New Year.
As per WhoScored, Koch has attained an average of 85% of pass success rate in the Bundesliga this season. He has made 1.4 interceptions, 1.2 tackles, 3.3 clearances and 0.7 blocks per game.
Standing at 6ft 3in tall, the two-cap Germany international is excellent when it comes to winning aerial duels. He is good at reading the game and can make some vital recoveries for his team.
Wolves must freshen up things at the back by bringing someone who can come in and stop the flow of goals. Koch will be a great addition to the Wanderers backline, so Nuno should try and do everything in his powers to sign him during the winter transfer window.
