Watford reviving interest in signing this solid 28-year-old Spaniard would reinforce their backline massively

Why Watford should go all out to sign Juanpe Ramirez in January

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Watford were interested in signing Girona centre-back Juanpe Ramirez. But a deal didn’t materialise and the Hornets instead went on to sign Craig Dawson from West Brom.

The Hornets were humiliated by Manchester City, losing 8-0 at the Etihad Stadium, leaving them rock bottom of the table. To make matters worse, the incredible scoreline now leaves them with a -14 goal difference – nine worse than the nearest total of -5, belonging to Norwich City.

The club have already sacked manager Javi Gracia and brought in ex-boss Quique Sanchez Flores to try and pump life back into the demoralised players. It hasn’t gone well so far for the Spaniard, although there were at least sparks of promise against an inconsistent Arsenal side.

However, Watford’s showing at Manchester City was absolutely dismal and Flores needs to quickly turnaround things if he’s to keep his job at Vicarage Road.

A new central must be made an absolute priority in January as the Hornets are just incapable of stemming the flow of goals. Not a single defender has performed consistently, leading to the side leaking a staggering 18 goals in just six games.

Solving the defensive conundrum will arguably be Flores’ biggest challenge and he’ll have to find a way to make do with the options at his disposal. When the transfer window reopens, he must make a move for Girona’s Juanpe Ramirez.

In his debut campaign, Juanpe, 28, played a key role as Girona were promoted to the Spanish top flight for the first time in their history.

He was one of the rare bright sparks in an otherwise woeful last campaign that saw Girona get relegated from the La Liga. With Girona in the Segunda Division, Watford certainly can convince the defender to walk away.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Juanpe certainly has the physical attributes to play in the Premier League.

Strong, physical and commanding, the Spaniard would certainly enhance a defence that has looked far too open so far this season. He could thrive in Flores’ defensive system at Vicarage Road, whilst adding some depth to a backline who has only Craig Dawson, Craig Cathcart, Cristian Kabasele and Adrian Mariappa.

Verdict

With Watford likely to find themselves battling relegation, some extra options would be welcomed. Hence, they shouldn’t hesitate much and go all out for Juanpe to solve their defensive conundrum.
