Why Ugurcan Cakir would be a smart addition to Liverpool’s ranks

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Juventus have joined Liverpool in the race for Trabzonspor goalkeeper, Ugurcan Cakir.

Ugurcan Cakir, 23, joined the Trabzonspor youth set-up at a young age from Yamanspor in the summer transfer window of 2011.

He climbed through the youth ranks of Trabzonspor before tasting first-team football back in 2014. The Antalya-born starlet put in a string of impressive displays between the sticks last season, helping his club attain a fourth-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig.

The report adds Liverpool have scouted the Trabzonspor shot-stopper in the past and could make a bid in January. But they will now face still competition from Serie A champions Juventus for the player. So, what should be Liverpool’s play?

The 2019/20 season is only a few weeks old but The Reds have already endured their fair share of problems between the sticks. Alisson Becker has been missing since sustaining a calf injury in the opening day victory against Norwich City.

In his absence, Adrian has had a few nervy moments. At 32, however, Adrian is hardly a long-term solution, while third-choice goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has entered the twilight of his career.

It makes complete sense for Liverpool to scour the market for a new, young goalkeeper. And Ugurcan Cakir would be good fit at Anfield.

Cakir is very highly rated in Turkey and has been scouted by Liverpool in the last few months. Juventus now showing interest in the shot-stopper tells one his meteoric rise at Trabzonspor.

He made his international bow for Turkey in March and he has continued the form from his impressive breakthrough campaign in the opening games of the new season.

At just 23, the Turkish shot-stopper still has plenty of time to develop. It’s great to see Jurgen Klopp and co. thinking about the long-term future, though, and he certainly possesses the ability to play for Liverpool.

With Cakir showing a lot of promise, it would be shrewd from the Reds’ perspective to move for him in January and play him in cup competitions to develop him as a reliable backup option to Alisson.
