Why Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama Would Be A Great Signing For Liverpool

Liverpool are reportedly one of the many Premier League clubs interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama over the summer. Wanyama is a solid player in the middle of the park and boasts of a lot of potential. However, he has been used less frequently by Mauricio Pochettino ever since he made a return from an injury he had picked up earlier.

The former Southampton man did start in a couple of FA Cup matches but he is yet to solidify a spot for himself in the starting XI and he could be open to moving in the summer to secure more game time.

As far as the pecking order is concerned in the middle of the park, Wanyama finds himself behind both Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele. The situation has become less-than-ideal for the talented Kenyan and with interest sparking from so many top clubs, he could be tempted to exit the club once the summer window rolls around.

Although Manchester United and Chelsea are also monitoring the situation, Wanyama can work wonders if he were to join the Merseyside club.

With Emre Can believed to be nearing a move to join Juventus at the end of the season, Jurgen Klopp will have space for a player like Wanyama. One might argue that he already has Naby Keita coming in from RB Leipzig in the summer but the fact is that Liverpool’s midfield will still need a player of Wanyama’s calibre.

The Kenyan is disciplined and dynamic in the sense that he can provide ample support to the defence while also contributing to the attack. Keita’s inclusion will definitely be advantageous but he is more of an attacker, thus providing scope for Wanyama to make room for himself in the midfield trio alongside him and Jordan Henderson.

Given Wanyama’s dedication and work-rate, signing him could be a brilliant move to bring about some much-needed solidity in the Reds’ midfield. However, Tottenham do not let their key players leave that easily and when it comes to someone with Wanyama’s potential, Liverpool could face an uphill task to even try to lure him to Anfield.

Moreover, the £27m-rated Kenya international is known to be quite loyal and is unlikely to leave Tottenham and join a direct rival. He might not have received adequate game time this season but his contract runs until 2021. Wanyama has made an impact off the bench for Spurs and he will be crucial for them beyond the end of the season as well.

Hence, with the club fighting hard to secure a Champions League spot, it is highly impossible for them to sanction a deal for Wanyama to join Klopp’s team. Hence, while he could work wonders for Liverpool, it remains to be seen if they succeed in convincing him to move from North London to the Merseyside.
