Why Signing This £25m Rated Hot Prospect Is Not A Priority For Liverpool

The Adam Lallana saga is all over the media as the speculations are rising whether Liverpool have bid an amount of £20 million for the Southampton captain and whether they have rejected the move and asked for an additional £5 million. (Which comes around to £25m, according to the report from The Guardian) But whatever the scenario may be, now it seems almost inevitable that Lallana would join Liverpool and that too before the World Cup.

As much influential as Lallana has been in the seasons, the question must arise that whether Liverpool really need a player of his stature in their team and that too for such a substantial amount of money.

Liverpool have done pretty well this season in the frontline with a host of players clicking at the right time. Apart from Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, the one who needs a special mention is Raheem Sterling. The 19 year old has made brilliant runs, been precise in front of the goal and always been out of the box. Although Sterling has operated mainly from the right side of the field, he has also been impressive when asked to play on the left side. Apart from Sterling, Liverpool have another talented young player capable of playing on the left side called Philippe Coutinho.

When making additions to the team, the manager must also consider the current players and buy according to that. In that respect it seems that spending such a huge amount for Lallana may be a bit overstretched. And then the fact remains that players like Suso and Ibe are just waiting for their turn to feature in the team.

It has been proved too many times this season that Liverpool’s main problems are not their attacking incapability, but rather their lack of a defensive cohesion. Their defensive organization has been in shambles and the opponents have taken advantage of that far too many times. The urgent need for the manager should have been a defensive midfielder and not another playmaker. This season Steven Gerrard has played in the defensive midfield role and he has certainly not justified his new position. Lucas, who had been a vital player for the club in the previous seasons, has remained injured most of the season and this has hampered his performance to an unrepeatable extent.

Now defensive midfielders do not come cheap, going by the price of the recent additions in the department by other clubs. Brendan Rodgers’ primary concern should have been a defensive midfielder, in the Alonso mould. Apart from that a left-back is the call of the hour.

Many would argue that Liverpool would have to play in four competitions this season. After a long time they are playing in the Champions League and this would call for a bigger squad, and hence the need of Lallana. But when one thinks that the targets of Liverpool last summer like Willian, Salah, Mkhitaryan have all cost less and also done good for their teams, then the price of Lallana seems a bit too far stretched.

Lallana is one of the hottest prospects of English football right now and he can have a good impact at Liverpool, but if there are players like Sanchez, Pedro or Shaqiri available, then they should be made the first targets.
