Why Manchester United should stay away from Jordan Pickford

According to a report from the Athletic, Manchester United are considering a move for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford should David de Gea fail to pen a new deal.

David de Gea, 28, is out of contract in the summer and Juventus are ready to open talks with him after the New Year ahead of snapping him up on a free in June.

Manchester United remain confident that, despite the ongoing stand-off with the Spaniard, he will commit his future at Old Trafford.

But the Red Devils are making contingency plans in case De Gea decides to leave and are monitoring the situation of Everton’s Jordan Pickford. But is Pickford that good enough to replace De Gea at Old Trafford?

De Gea’s contract saga has dragged on all summer and beyond, with the fans waiting for the magic announcement. The Spaniard is regarded as one of the best in the world and he leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer would be nothing short of disastrous.

He has been a four-time winner of United’s player of the year award but the 28-year-old’s form since the 2018 World Cup has been awful.

The Spanish international had a tough time for United last campaign, especially in the second half where he made major mistakes against Barcelona, Manchester City, Everton and Chelsea that dearly cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

This season, De Gea’s not been at his very best, with another poor mistake in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

As far as Jordan Pickford is concerned, he has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League. The former Sunderland man has been a consistent performer between the sticks at the Goodison Park. In addition, he is also the no.1 goalkeeper for the England national team.

What makes Pickford an attractive proposition for United is his distribution skills and ability to remain calm under pressure situation. Yet, he has let down Everton at times with his erratic kicking and anticipation.

The 25-year-old was recently part of a horrid night for the England backline in their 5-3 victory over Kosovo at St. Mary’s, although it was the defenders in front of the goalkeeper who should take on more of the blame.

Despite Pickford being an undisputed no.1 for both Everton and England, United must stay away from him.

He’s likely to cost a lot of money and the Red Devils should think twice before placing such a mammoth bid for the goalkeeper.

Solskjaer needs quality players in other areas of the pitch, especially in midfield and attack, and a huge bid for Pickford would eat into the transfer kitty markedly.

Verdict

If De Gea decides to leave, United should drop the idea of signing Pickford. They must pursue a cheaper goalkeeping option and spend money wisely to strengthen other areas of the pitch as well.
