Manchester United have a lot of rebuilding to do over the summer and Jose Mourinho seems to be taking proactive steps to do just that. As per a report from Daily Star, the Red Devils have established contact with James Rodriguez, who is currently playing for German giants Bayern Munich on loan from Real Madrid.
His current loan spell is set to run until 2019 but if the La Liga giants choose to sanction a sale, they can do so for the right amount.
Now, United have been through numerous ups and downs this season and it comes as no surprise that the club are looking for a massive squad rehaul in the upcoming summer window. They might still be in the reckoning to finish as runners-up for this season but there has been a lot of controversy surrounding Mourinho’s tactics and what not.
Regardless, the club seems to be keen to move forward and has identified Rodriguez as a possible target to come out of troubles.
While it can be a great move, one must bear in mind that Mourinho currently has a plethora of attacking options at hand. It can be argued that Rodriguez is an incredibly versatile player and he could add a lot of value to the club. That is true but United do not really need another attacker in their team.
They already have the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez vying for regular starting spots – and all of these players are some of the best in Europe right now.
Adding Rodriguez to the mix would only complicate things further. To be honest, the Red Devils are in desperate need of a defensive midfielder and they also need to strengthen their back line. That said, a creative playmaker can work wonders for them but the club can look for other options in the market. Much like every other Real Madrid player, it is safe to assume that Rodriguez will not come cheap.
Ordinarily, the Colombian could have been a wonderful addition but with a visible need to strengthen other areas, it might be wise for United to steer clear from Rodriguez.
While a move for the 26-year-old could benefit United on certain levels, they can also manage without him. Instead of wasting money on a deal for a player who can actually do very little to minimise their bigger woes, it might be better for Mourinho to look for other options before making hasty decisions in the upcoming summer transfer window.
