According to a report in the Sun, Loris Karius has asked to cut short his loan deal at Besiktas and return to Liverpool as soon as possible. The German is in the middle of a two-year loan deal at the Turkish club after he was frozen out at Anfield by Jurgen Klopp.
The move away from Liverpool was designed to regain the 25-year-old some of the lost confidence after two high-profile errors in the Champions League final against Real Madrid (h/t Sun).
But instead, the experience in Turkey hasn’t been great for him. It is suggested that he is chasing the money owed to him by the Besiktas bosses. Furthermore, the keeper wasn’t happy when he was singled out by manager Senol Gomes as part of the criticism after a match (h/t Sun).
With the end of the season around the corner, we could see Karius come back to Anfield in the summer. Here’s why Liverpool should sell him, preferably to a Bundesliga club:
Karius was signed in the summer of 2016 as a potential replacement for Simon Mignolet. However, the German broke his hand in the pre-season, delaying his progress.
He started playing regularly from January 2018 until the end of last season and did a good job in the league games. But a couple of high-profile mistakes against Madrid in the Champions League final costed Liverpool the match.
That was a negative turning point in his career from where not many come back and resurrect their career, especially at that very club. Hence, it was a sensible decision from Liverpool’s viewpoint to loan him out.
With the keeper aiming to come back to Merseyside in the summer, it won’t be ideal both for the player and the club that they work together. The best solution would be to sell the German back to the Bundesliga, a league where he made his name at Mainz.
