The Express has reported that Liverpool have entered the race for Norwich City’s highly-rated centre-back Ben Godfrey. The 21-year-old has also been targeted heavily in recent weeks by Manchester United, with the Red Devils looking for a new superstar.
However, the Reds believe that Godfrey is good enough to play alongside Virgil Van Dijk, according to the Express.
An up and coming star, the Norwich City centre-back has shown that he has the ability to play for a top Premier League side in the near future. Cool, calm and composed, Godfrey has been an integral part of Norwich City’s plans this season.
At the moment, the Canaries sit in pole position in the Championship, thanks to a run of good results.
With just seven games left in the season, it’s now or never for Norwich City and the Canaries need to keep their run going. Ben Godfrey is key to their team, alongside Max Aarons and Teemu Pukki.
However, while both Aarons and Pukki made the Championship Team of the Season, Godfrey failed to make the cut. The 21-year-old fell just short of Reece James and Leeds United star Liam Cooper in the final cut, but that shouldn’t affect any move.
In fact for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has had great success dipping into the Championship in the past, with Andrew Robertson flourishing.
But Gomez’s injury issues this season have been a big blow to Liverpool and while Matip has successfully stepped into the fold, the Reds have no-one else. Self-proclaimed best defender in the world Dejan Lovren hasn’t had the best time due to injuries and is struggling to cope with the Premier league.
The Croatian has made more than his fair share of mistakes, and it emphases why a move for Ben Godfrey needs to be made. Unlike either Lovren or Matip, Godfrey is very confident on the ball and loves surging forward despite being a centre-back by trade.
Furthermore, the Norwich City centre-back has a brilliant passing range and combines that with his no-nonsense style of defending. Not the tallest, the youngster has still averaged 1.1 tackles, 3.7 clearances and has only been dribbled past 0.3 times per 90 minutes.
While both Matip and Van Dijk have made more tackles, only Van Dijk has made more clearances. That is downright impressive for a Championship player and it shows why a move would be good for both sides.

Ben Godfrey has a very bright future ahead of him and it’s one that Liverpool need to make sure that they benefit from. The Reds need a new centre-back, especially since Dejan Lovren is not someone a title-challenging side has to have in its back-line.
