The Sun has revealed that West Ham United are all set to make a move for Newcastle United star Jonjo Shelvey in the summer. The former Liverpool midfielder was initially a big part of Rafael Benitez’s plans for the team, but has since lost his place, thanks to injuries and various other issues this season.
Add to that, the emergence of Sean Longstaff and Benitez has completely forgotten about Shelvey’s place in the starting eleven. For a midfielder in his prime, that’s something which should never happen and if it does, maybe it’s time to move on.
More so, for West Ham United, it means that they can get the box-to-box midfielder they’ve been looking for.
Mark Noble and Declan Rice have been Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield pairing and with both Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez out for the possible future, Pellegrini needs more options. That’s exactly why Shelvey would be close to perfect for the London Stadium side.
His lung-bursting runs, physical presence and defensive work rate means Declan Rice would get a great midfield partner. However, any move does come with its risks and rewards.
While Jonjo Shelvey’s attitude and consistency are questionable at times, the 27-year-old is a worthy option to have.
A prime influence of the game at his very best, Shelvey’s ability on and off the ball has never come into question. Even during his spell at Liverpool and Swansea City, the Englishman has divided opinions.
That’s what the midfielder offers and if West Ham manage to make a move, Manuel Pellegrini can iron out the issues.
The former Manchester City manager has managed to produce a few miracles, including orchestrating Declan Rice’s rise among other things. Any move, however, would cost at least £20million (Sun).
Given the 27-year-old’s talent and ability, if they do manage to get the best out of the Englishman, it’s well worth the money.

But the question for West Ham United to answer is if Jonjo Shelvey be the missing link that guarantees the club Europa League football and a top seven place.
