According to Examiner Live, Huddersfield Town have completed the signing of 16-year-old starlet Patrick Jones from Wrexham, with the Welsh prodigy putting pen to paper on a two-year scholarship deal in West Yorkshire.
The same report claims that all the formalities have been completed but the move is still pending international clearance, given that it is a cross-border one.
The 16-year-old rose through the youth ranks at Wrexham but he never made a senior competitive appearance for the Welsh outfit, who are currently in the Conference Premier, the fifth tier of English football. However, he did feature for the club in a 2-0 pre-season friendly victory over Curzon Ashton.
A relative latecomer to the professional game, Patrick Jones played non-league football for Ruthin Town and Bala Town before joining the Red Dragons at the youth level in November 2018.
The 16-year-old has already represented Wales at the U-16 level and he has been named in his nation’s U-17 squad for the international matches scheduled to be held during the upcoming international break next month.
The teenager, who has been profiled as an attacking midfielder capable of playing out wide on either flank and also through the centre, was held in high regard by the youth coaching staff at Wrexham.
Jones has earned rave reviews for his talent very early in the formative years of his career, with the scouts regarding him as a player with the potential to push on and make an impression at the highest level in England.
Still only 16, the attacker has illustrated a level of maturity that belies his tender years and Huddersfield Town have apparently seen enough promise in him to snap him up as a bright exciting prospect for the future.
To put things into perspective, Patrick Jones is unlikely to play a part in Huddersfield Town’s first team in the Championship this term but he has been brought in as a part of the Terrier’s long-term plans moving forward.
The 16-year-old is expected to initially link up with Jon Worthington’s U-17 squad after clearance is received and then it will be up to him to climb up the ladder.
Currently languishing bottom of the table in the Championship, the Terriers are in dire need of bringing in reinforcements to bolster the first-team but signing a promising youngster does always makes sense.
Not only would he increase competition for places in the club’s youth ranks but the Terriers might have a gem on their hands in the future if he goes on to fulfil his promise.
Danny Cowley illustrated a high level of proficiency in nurturing young talents during the course of his managerial days at Lincoln City and he will eventually need to polish a few gems at Huddersfield as well if the Terriers are to enhance their status in the years to come.
With that in mind, Huddersfield Town have taken a step in the right direction with the acquisition of Jones and it is a move that could possibly go on to pay rich dividends in the future.
