Why Huddersfield could save their season by splashing £10m on this 10-goal Championship star – opinion

Why Neal Maupay would be a smart signing for Huddersfield in January

Huddersfield Town are interested in Brentford ace Neal Maupay as manager David Wagner plots a £10million swoop in January, reports the Sun.

Maupay, 22, has been sensational in the Championship for Brentford as boss Dean Smith chases promotion this season. The France U21 international bagged his tenth goal of the campaign against Leeds United on Saturday and has three assists to his name already.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a solid debut campaign in English football with Brentford last term, scoring 13 goals and featuring in 42 Championship games. That made him Brentford’s top scorer and he has continued his rich exploits in front of the goal this season, which has made him a hot property.

David Wagner must surely make a move for Maupay in January. Wagner guided Huddersfield to a promotion and then kept them in the Premier League against all the odds last season.

He strengthened his squad in the summer to have a chance of repeating that feat in an extremely challenging league this season.

However, things haven’t gone according to the scripts for Wagner as Huddersfield lie in the relegation zone with no wins in eight games so far. The Terriers have conceded 17 goals already and have managed just four in return, which is not up to the standards of a team looking to stay in the Premier League.

Huddersfield have lacked the cutting edge in the final third, with the likes of Laurent Depoitre, Steve Mounie, Adama Diakhaby and Isaac Mbenza failing to deliver the goods. The Terriers are desperately in need of firepower in the forward department and Maupay could be that ideal player to provide the club with goals.

Goals are exactly what Wagner’s team is lacking at the moment. Maupay, who came through the ranks at Nice, would be an ideal fit for Wagner’s system.

The Frenchman is a pacy and intelligent centre-forward who is willing to make runs behind the defenders. He has also proven that he’s got predatory instincts in front of the goal, around the six-yard box.

He has shown plenty of promise in the Championship and while Premier League is a different animal altogether, Maupay has the attributes to take the Premier League by storm, provided he gets to work under the right manager.

The 22-year-old could be a crucial addition for Huddersfield in January as Wagner looks to defy the odds again. Hence, without any second thoughts, Huddersfield must make a move for the Brentford star once the transfer window reopens.
