Watford signing this intelligent 24-year-old star would be a terrific addition by Quique Flores

Why Gaston Pereiro would be a smart signing for Watford

Back in July, a report from Watford Observer had claimed Watford were interested in signing PSV Eindhoven attacker Gaston Pereiro. However, a deal didn’t go through during the summer transfer window.

Watford, of course, would then go on to complete a club-record deal for Senegal international Ismaila Sarr, while Danny Welbeck also made his move to Vicarage Road on a free transfer earlier in the summer.

Bolstered by such high-profile additions, the Vicarage Road faithful would have expected their team to push on and challenge for a top-six this term after a wonderful run to the final of the FA Cup last season.

But things have been woeful since the start of the season as the Hornets currently lie rock bottom of the table. They are yet to win a game in the Premier League and even after a change in the managerial hot seat, things haven’t looked like changing for better.

Clearly, Watford need some signings over during the January transfer window if they are to avoid relegation from the top-flight.

Without new signings, Quique Sanchez Flores’ team look destined to go down. Signing a creative midfielder that can also contribute with a regular supply of goals has to be one of Flores’ top priorities when the transfer window reopens.

To that end, rekindling interest in Gaston Pereiro makes sense. Pereiro has been a huge hit at PSV Eindhoven since joining from Nacional in 2015. He enjoyed a really solid 2018/19 campaign in the Eredivisie, managing 10 goals and six assists in 27 games. The Uruguay international has played just once this season as he fractured his collarbone in training.

Now fully fit and raring to make a mark, Pereiro’s contract, however, expires at the end of the campaign. Well, that could see Watford bag his signature in a cut-price deal in the New Year.

In terms of his attributes, Pereiro, a technically gifted player, is a creative midfielder by trade, known for his innate ability to create space in the final third and torment the opposition with his incisive passing, vision and dribbling skills.

The Uruguayan has the ability to pick a pass in the final third and has a knack of arriving late in the box to finish off chances.

The 24-year-old is a diligent, smart player who is strong at keeping hold of the ball, while his composure allows him to link up well with his teammates in midfield as well as the attacking third.

Watford could do with an affordable addition to their squad like Pereiro, as he can provide some competition for the likes of Roberto Pereyra, Ismaila Sarr, Gerard Deulofeu and Will Hughes.

Verdict

Given the Uruguayan’s versatility, that allows him to play out wide as well as centrally, and his record for scoring and creating goals, Pereiro would certainly represent a worthy investment for the Hornets.
