Why Emery’s Arsenal over Pochettino’s Tottenham is a better destination for this £25m Serie A starlet

Why Arsenal over Tottenham is a better destination for Joachim Andersen

According to a report in Sun Football, north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are in talks with Serie A club Sampdoria for Danish centre-back Joachim Andersen. The 22-year-old has earned rave reviews since joining Sampdoria from FC Twente and is rated at around £25m. He has also attracted interest from Manchester United.

Andersen is yet to play for the senior national team, however, he has featured at youth level, including the Denmark U21s. Arsenal already raided Sampdoria once in the summer window to buy defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira. And as per the report, Unai Emery is looking to sign another player from the same club when the January transfer window opens.

But the Spaniard will face competition from nearest rivals Tottenham (h/t Sun). The latter is in danger of losing two of their key centre-backs, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen when their contracts expire at the end of this season. As a result of this, they might be in the market for a centre-back.

However, here’s why Andersen’s Premier League move would make more sense if he signs for the Gunners:

Arsenal’s project is more attractive

Any young and upcoming talent getting linked with big clubs, especially from the Premier League, is a testament to his talent and ability on the football pitch. Joachim Andersen is no different.

The Danish youth international has been a sensation, more so this season after getting regular starts at Sampdoria under the management of Marco Giampaolo.

The reason why Arsenal could be a more attractive project for him is predominantly down to the current state of the club. The Gunners are in transition and Emery is doing a fantastic job to build something.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are unsure about the futures of several key players and their wage structure is an ever-present issue. Furthermore, the stadium switch is still in the air.

Looking at it from the outside, both Emery and Pochettino love to manage young players with talent and make them world-beaters in due course of time. But with the situation at the Emirates being better, it would make sense for Andersen to move there.

From Arsenal’s point of view, they probably need a quality centre-back to challenge for accolades. Getting the Danish stopper would be a step in the right direction.
