Derby County Opinion: Rams should sign Francisco Montero

When Frank Lampard took over at Derby County, few would have been convinced with the move. However, since then, Lampard has turned fortunes around and the Rams sit in a playoff spot at the moment with around 10 games left in the season.

While they have an outside chance of gaining promotion, alongside the top two sides, Lampard’s side still needs reinforcements. A lot of loan players make up the Rams’ team, with four players on loan.

This includes Chelsea starlets Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori, Leicester City star Andy King and Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson.

All will return to their respective clubs at the end of the season and it will mean trouble for Derby County. However, that’s nothing that cannot be changed through a few well-placed transfers but one area that Lampard will have to reinforce is his defence.

The club have had a few issues there, but have six out of their 10 players above the age of thirty. This further means trouble and in a few seasons, they won’t be able to perform at the highest level.

While it is solvable, one player that the club should target is Atletico Madrid starlet Francisco Montero. The 20-year-old is a class act at the back and has been performing very well at youth levels, so much so that he earned a senior debut.

That came in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund before he made his La Liga debut four months later.

So far, the 20-year-old has played in five La Liga games and two Champions League ties for the senior side, which shows a marked improvement for the young starlet.

A pacy centre-back, the Spaniard’s awareness and tactical understanding would be perfect for Lampard’s side and he would slot straight into their first-team next season.

That combined with his defensive nuance, ability on the ball and sheer skill does make him perfect for the club. But what makes a move very very good for Derby is the fact that he is out of contract at the end of the current season.

That means that if the Rams somehow manage to convince Francisco Montero to make the move, the money they save can be used elsewhere.

Conclusion

It’s close to the perfect move for manager Frank Lampard and given the young centre-back’s talent, it’s a no-brainer.
