Two Alternatives For Kenny McLean Who Rangers Can Consider

Rangers’ spending spree is far from over as they aim to continue improving their squad before the big kick-off. With reports emerging that Rangers are close to a breakthrough on the Graham Dorrans deal (one by the way which will send them several steps closer to Celtic in the blink of an eye), they are still apparently on the trail of Aberdeen’s Kenny McLean.

McLean was a major reason why Aberdeen finished second last season, albeit a whopping 39 points behind Celtic, scoring 5 goals in 53 games. The £510,000 rated McLean has just a year left on his current deal at Aberdeen but the club say he is simply not for sale.

The Dons have already lost Niall McGinn, Ash Taylor and of course Ryan Jack (to Rangers) and could do without any more losses. McLean is a Rangers boy through and through and would relish the move, but should Aberdeen win the fight to keep the man from Rutherglen, here is who the Gers could go for instead.

Graham Dorrans (Norwich City)

As mentioned above, Rangers already look like getting their man in Dorrans and the Norwich City man plays a very similar role to McLean. Dorrans also represents a rather big step up for Rangers in terms of quality and in one fell swoop, would take the club to a new level for next season if he signs.

He, along with Ryan Jack, will provide a huge improvement in the Gers’ midfield area and make them much, much tougher to beat, especially in Old Firm Games. Should Dorrans sign, it would show two things, 1) that they are back in the big time when it comes to signings and wages, and 2) that they are about more than Latin and Ibernian Peninsula players. Dorrans, remember, is a Rangers fan.

Vurnon Anita (Newcastle United)

The Dutchman, allowed to leave Newcastle after their Championship triumph last season, would be another huge improvement on what Rangers have had at their disposal in recent years. The question would be if they can afford his salary, though the same question has been asked regarding Dorrans as well.

Another advantage Anita brings is his versatility; the former Ajax man spent most of his time with Rafa Benitez playing at right-back, but can also fill in on the other side. If you asked the player, I’m sure he would tell you he’s a defensive midfield player though and his tenacity and passing ability would mark him as one of the best players in Scottish football.
