With a 6-0 deficit to overcome Sam Allardyce’s West Ham face a seemingly impossible task against Manchester City at Upton Park in tonight’s Capital One Cup semi-final.
A hat-trick by Alvaro Negredo, two goals from Edin Dzeko and a barnstorming goal from Yaya Toure helped Manuel Pellegrini’s side to a comprehensive win at the Etihad, putting a final spot at Wembley all but out of reach for The Hammers.
Man City have racked up an impressive 103 goals in all competitions this year and have 15 wins from 17 ahead of tonight’s game. To make matters worse, West Ham have not beaten City in any competition since a 1-0 win at Upton Park in 2009.
While a number of key players are expected to be rested by Pellegrini, such as David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Negredo, this will open up chances for the likes of Stefan Jovetic who is expected to start. West Ham will be bolstered by the return of Kevin Nolan and the now fit Andy Carroll. However with such a mountain to climb it’s unclear whether Allardyce will want to risk injury to two key players.
