Why signing Dwight Gayle would be a statement of intent from West Brom
According to a report from the Telegraph, West Brom are going all out to re-sign Dwight Gayle on loan but are facing competition from Championship rivals Leeds United and Stoke City.
Dwight Gayle, 28, enjoyed a fantastic season on loan with West Brom, scoring 24 goals last season, having arrived at the Hawthorns on loan as part of a swap deal that took Salomon Rondon to Newcastle. He was the Baggies’ top scorer last term and the thought of going back should certainly appeal to the 28-year-old.
West Brom, who won their opening Championship game of the season against Nottingham Forest, need some firepower to replace Jay Rodriguez and Salomon Rondon.
Even with the signing of Kenneth Zohore from Cardiff City, signing Gayle makes sense as Slaven Bilic plots a way to achieve top-flight promotion next year.
Gayle’s hopes of playing regularly at Newcastle appear to be over due to Joelinton’s arrival at the club. That should make it easier for the Baggies to acquire the 28-year-old’s signature. Pretty much every West Brom fan knows what Gayle would offer the club, as his 24 goals last season were vital in Albion’s pursuit of promotion.
The 28-year-old speedy centre-forward has proven himself to be lethal at Championship level, so a proven scorer of Gayle’s ability would be a welcome addition to Bilic’s side.
He would certainly bring a major goal threat, as he’s an excellent finisher in the box and likes to run the channels. He can also play as a secondary striker and do the job of linking up the play between the midfield and the attack.

While Zohore will add physicality and power to West Brom’s attack, Gayle’s speed should come in handy during counter-attacks. Gayle’s attributes will suit Bilic’s system at the Hawthorns, and bringing him back would be a hugely popular move. It’s a no-brainer for the Baggies.
Verdict
If West Brom succeed in bringing back the former Crystal Palace star, he could well be the difference-maker in their bid to earn promotion as he is such a prolific scorer at Championship level. He is precisely the type of player who will be a good fit for Bilic’s brand of football at the Midlands club.
