Liverpool eased past Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 to cement their place at the top of league. Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk scored the two goals to help the Reds cruise past their Friday night opponents in a driving rain at the Molineux.
The first goal came in the 18th minute when a free-kick move was broken down but Jurgen Klopp’s men kept possession. Fabinho then did a neat exchange with Sadio Mane to find himself on the byline with space. The Brazilian then provided a clever cutback for Salah to score. It looked like an easy finish but the way the Egyptian flicked the ball from outside of the boot at first contact to get past Rui Patricio was magical.
Wolves had a couple of chances during the latter period of the first half, partly down to the sloppiness of Liverpool in possession. Matt Doherty and Adama Traore had pops at goal but Alisson Becker was there for the Reds to make the saves and keep hold of the ball on a wet surface.
The league leaders got their second goal in the 68th minute when Salah picked up the lose ball following a clearing header. The Egyptian drove the cross towards the six-yard box and van Dijk was there to finish it first time like a striker. The game was done and dusted at that moment.
This result leaves Liverpool four points clear of Manchester City with the Cityzens due to play Crystal Palace tomorrow. Wolves stay at seventh position in the table and are vulnerable to go a place or two down by Sunday.
