Liverpool regained top spot in the Premier League with a rather comfortable 3-1 win over Manchester United at Anfield on a chilly Sunday evening. Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri (x2) were on target for the home side, while Jesse Lingard scored the only for the away team.
After a high throttle start by Jurgen Klopp’s men, Fabinho found some space in the midfield in the 24th minute. The Brazilian clipped a straight ball in behind the United defence with precision. He found Mane with it, who did well to chest the ball and finish it in one motion.
United equalised nine minutes later, when a Romelu Lukaku cross was spilled by Alisson. Lingard was on hand to score. At that moment, the Liverpool keeper would have been kicking himself for giving away such a cheap goal.
The Reds didn’t stop though and kept on probing. Eventually, Shaqiri was brought on by Jurgen Klopp to replace Naby Keita. The Swiss looked determined to make the difference and he did exactly that.
After Mane’s good work on the byline, the ball ricocheted off de Gea’s foot and fell kindly for Shaqiri who put his right foot through it. The deflection from Ashley Young meant the keeper had no chance to save.
In the 80th minute, Shaqiri played a one-two with Firmino and Salah, before placing it in the corner, via a slight deviation from Eric Bailly. This win means Liverpool are 19 points ahead of Manchester United after 17 league games.
