Watford completing a summer move for 21-year-old rising star would solve a key issue for Javi Gracia

Watford Opinion: Should Watford make a move for Pablo Maffeo?

While Watford have their issues, the Hornets are still in contention for a Europa League spot and sit behind seventh-placed Wolves on goal difference. Otherwise, the club are in good shape.

Nevertheless, they need reinforcements. What the club really needs is another right-back.

At the moment, manager Javi Gracia has only Daryl Janmaat, Kiko Femenia and Marc Navarro at his disposal. But nobody has done enough to earn a first team spot. Janmaat has taken over the right-back spot, but the 29-year-old hasn’t aged well and has seen his speed disappear over time.

That’s exactly why the club needs to make sure that one of their summer targets is Pablo Maffeo. The 21-year-old has been in fine form for VfB Stuttgart.

The Bundesliga side are struggling in the German top tier and currently sit 16th in the league, with just 16 points to their name after 23 games. This is why Watford have to make a move for Pablo Maffeo.

The former Manchester City youth starlet has been among the club’s top performers this season. Speed and agility, combined with impressive defensive nuance and tactically ingenuity, all describe the 21-year-old right-back.

He’s versatile enough to play anywhere across the defence and that makes him even more valuable. While he does have his weakness, that’s something that can be ironed out under the right manager.

Javi Gracia has managed to get Gerard Deulofeu, Will Hughes and even Roberto Pereyra achieve consistency. Watford would be shrewd to make a move for Maffeo.
