Tottenham signing this World Cup runner-up would be a blunder and Pochettino must avoid it at all costs

Tottenham Opinion: Spurs want Ivan Perisic – a bad move?

According to a report in ESPN (h/t Sun), Tottenham are leading the race to sign Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic. The Croat was quite vehemently linked with a move to Arsenal in the January window, and he even handed in a transfer request to the Italian club, but the move didn’t happen.

Spurs are now interested in signing the 30-year-old World Cup runner-up despite Mauricio Pochettino’s original philosophy of only buying young players.

However, the Sun (h/t Sportwitness) reports a twist in the plot, claiming that Perisic wanted to join Tottenham and not Arsenal. He did not sign for the former as the deal couldn’t be struck.

Here’s why Spurs shouldn’t keep their interest in the winger and look for other options in the summer window:

Ivan Perisic

Perisic’s playing style and persona are different from Tottenham’s identity

Spurs doing so well this season without spending a penny in the previous two windows is exceptional, to say the least. Pochettino’s style of play is based on full-backs venturing forward and providing the width, while the front-line stays narrow along with the midfield.

Even if the Argentine wants to change the system, he has the likes of Lucas Moura, Eric Lamela, Heung-Min Son to deploy in the wide areas.

Hence, spending a good chunk of money on a winger doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for Tottenham. It is partly because Spurs haven’t spent anything in the last two windows, and expecting them to have a huge chunk of money in their kitty in the summer would be an overstatement.

Furthermore, due to the departure of Mousa Dembele and recurrent injury problems of Victor Wanyama, the team requires depth and quality in the midfield. Moussa Sissoko has done well this season, but the Frenchman has been linked with a move away (h/t Calciomercato).

Mauricio Pochettino

Hence, it is clear where Pochettino needs to spend if he aspires to lead this team to glory in the future. Signing a box-to-box midfielder who is technically good and tactically aware would be the best option.

The signing of a back-up for Harry Kane is also a necessity given that Fernando Llorente is not getting any younger at 33.

Verdict

All in all, Tottenham have other areas to strengthen before they can think of buying a winger. In any case, the philosophy of their manager is to get talented young players and make them world-beaters in due course of time. And Perisic is a complete opposite to all of that.
