Tottenham Blog: How Will Spurs Line Up With Clinton N’Jie?

Tottenham Blog

According to the latest reports, Cameroon attacker, Clinton N’Jie is Tottenham’s main Summer transfer target. The Cameroon international plays/played as a winger and occasional striker for Olympique Lyon, Hugo Lloris’s former club. He was a goal threat last season and also helped create chances as he racked up 10 assists in the League 1. With this new signing, how exactly will Spurs change the team lineup and the dynamics of their gameplay.

Firstly, I don’t think Pochettino will change his style of play or philosophy. In fact, he only signs players he thinks will fit the bill. Spurs were lacking in width in the season opener against Manchester United and with Erik Lamela still not up to full fitness, N’jie will be a welcome addition to the starting lineup. He will take some time to settle in at the club, but the attack will not be as uni-dimensional through the centre from Eriksen and Kane alone as we saw against Manchester United last Saturday.

Spurs face Stoke who have made a tremendous signing in Shaqiri and come to White Hart Lane after making the double over the North Londoners last season. If N’Jie does make an appearance this weekend, his presence will make a big difference to the side. Eric Peiters is not up to full fitness and the Cameroon international can take advantage down the Spurs right flank and deliver in some crosses to Harry Kane.

Spurs faced a major problem with lack of width as Dembele, Eriksen and Chadli all prefer playing in the centre of the pitch. All 3 of them when deployed out wide, usually dribble past the defender and cut inside the field. With the addition of a winger who is capable of 1v1’s and take-ons, Spurs will be more threatening in attack.

Outside of the League 1, he is sort of an unknown quantity, something that Spurs must be cautious of. Erik Lamela has still not adapted completely to the English game and the levels of physicality that accompanies it, N’Jie if not given the proper motivation, trust and support from teammates and staff could very well end up as failure while he is actually coming in with bags of potential. Whether this will be the same old story for Spurs in failing to extract the potential from their signings or it rockets into a Gareth Bale like situation is completely in their hands. But one thing is for sure and that is, the signing of a pure winger is a sign that there is change in the strategy and tactics for Spurs, which would and should probably make them more interesting of a team capable of challenging for top 4 positions.
