Once called as the golden boy of Liverpool is now referred as a flop. Since Benitez took over, everyone has been curious as to how Torres will play under his former Liverpool boss in which he played the best football of his career.
Will the duo be able to re-create what they did at Liverpool? So far, the focus passing seems to be on Torres; the team aim to play him in behind every chance they get. Torres’ runs are also better – he is making a lot more near post runs when there is a cross incoming, and when Mata, Oscar, Hazard or Moses receive the ball, he is always off running the channels (like he did vs West Ham for his assist and Nordsjaelland for his 1st goal) and trying to get in behind the defence and beat them for pace.
Torres’ record so far under Benitez is 4 games played, 2 goals and 1 assist. An improvement on recent performances, though his 2 goals did come against a far inferior oppoisition in Nordsjaelland.
Talking about the Spaniard, Benitez said:
“I said before that if we created chances, he would score goals,” the manager said. “I saw him sharper in training yesterday, a bit more confidence, and he was fine today. The rest of the team helped. I hope (it’s a springboard) for him. He’s shown his quality today. If we can play at this level, he can score more goals.”
