Time for goodbye? – What could the arrival of this £26.4m mean to Arsenal’s fan favourite

Share

Jack Wilshere was once regarded as the poster boy of English football as he put in several impressive displays for Arsenal. With his level of skills and potential, Wilshere made an incomparable impact across England when he burst onto the Premier League scene.

However, as is the case with most promising youngsters, a series of injuries blighted his career and halted his momentum to a great extent. Over the course of the last season, the player did manage to steer clear of injuries and made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners.

Nevertheless, they were not enough to earn him a spot in England’s World Cup squad. With his contract set to expire at the end of this month, an exit from Arsenal seems to be on the cards for Wilshere.

And it is probably a good thing for him because Lucas Torreira’s potential arrival would only make things worse for the 25-year-old at the Emirates Stadium. As per reports, Arsenal are edging closer to completing a £26.4m move for the Sampdoria midfielder.

Jack Wilshere

Given the aggressiveness with which new boss Unai Emery has approached this transfer window, it looks quite likely for Torreira to complete a move to Arsenal in the days to come. And his presence in the squad would effectively signal the end for Wilshere at the north London club.

The Gunners have struggled with lack of quality and depth in the central midfield area for a long time now. And going forward, it will be important for them to get rid of Wilshere to bring in some much-needed changes.

Make no mistake, Wilshere’s influence and impact in the middle of the park is second to none. On his day, he can wreak havoc upon opponents with his excellent ball-retention skills and passing abilities.

But it is evident that the prolonged absence from regular game time has affected his quality to an extent. And perhaps to regain his form and reach his true potential, it would be better for the player to start over at a new club.

Unfortunately, Arsenal cannot afford to be that club right now. As things stand, they have a huge task at hand. It won’t be easy for Emery to replace someone like Arsene Wenger but he must do everything he can to try.

To do so, he needs proven quality players, who will be able to go out on any given day and make a solid impact. Wilshere is not capable of that right now. He needs time and patience but considering the gravity of Arsenal’s upcoming season, it would be better for him to seek a move elsewhere.
