Three things you probably didn’t know about Kevin Keegan

Kevin Keegan is one of the best loved players and managers in football – and with a fantastic record both at club level and in international football, it’s no surprise. In his career as a footballer he played as a forward for Liverpool, Southampton and Newcastle United amongst other clubs.

After moving into a management role, Keegan went on to work for old team Newcastle United for five years, before moving on to Fulham, England, Manchester City and a second spell with the Toon.

He started his career at Scunthorpe United

Based on the east coast of Lincolnshire, Scunthorpe United is now a League One team, playing in the third tier of the English football league system. It’s also where Kevin Keegan started his career back in 1966, when it was a fourth division side as an apprentice.

He won the prestigious Ballon d’Or… twice!

Kevin Keegan bagged the at the height of his 1970s bubble-perm and short-shorts fame in two consecutive years in the 1970s, 1978 and 1979. It’s the most prestigious award that a European footballer can win, and puts him at the top of his game for two golden years in the 1970s.

He released a single

In 1979, Keegan also released the single ‘Head Over Heels in Love’, an original composition. The B-side of the single was Move on Down, a rockier track and was co-written by band member Chris Norman. Although the single peaked at number 10 in the singles chart in Germany when it was released, it only made it to #31 in the UK.
