Three Reasons Why Signing Rafa Benitez’s Man Could Go Wrong For Liverpool

Liverpool have made a number of new additions to their ranks this season with the Suarez money and the additional revenue from the Champions League. But it can be surely said that not all of their new faces have clicked and there is a lot of improvement needed in the squad if they are to replicate their performance of last season. There are two distinct faces in the attacking midfield section namely Lazar Makovic and Adam Lallana. While Lallana was injured in the preseason and has so far not impressed, Markovic still needs time to live upto his expectations. This has left Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling as the two attacking midfielders and while Sterling has been brilliant to say the least, people expect a lot more from the Brazilian Coutinho.

This has made manager Brendan Rodgers think of adding attacking midfielder to the team and the name that has come up of is Marek Hamsik of Napoli. Napoli manager Rafa Bentitez has a strong relation with Liverpool and thus a move like this could happen with Liverpool midfielder Lucas, who is a long term target of Benitez, moving the other way round. But we take a look at three reasons why such a move would do no good to the Merseyside club.

Too many cooks

Liverpool already have Sterling, Coutinho, Markovic and Lallana to play in the attacking midfield position and another addition like Hamsik would only go to destabilize the momentum of the team. The youngsters would be made to feel insecure and they would lose faith on the team management. It is true that Lallana and Markovic have not fired yet, but it is too early to draw any conclusions. They should be given adequate time and opportunity to prove themselves and only then their performance can be reviewed.

The age factor

While the other Liverpool attacking midfielders are all young and have not reached the peak of their career, Hamsik is already 27 and there is a serious chance that he would not be able to carry on at the top most level for more than a couple of years more. If a player costs £25 million, the management would want him to continue for a certain time and Hamsik would not be the ideal man for this. He has also reached the peak of his career and there is not scope of improvement for him.

His overall game

Hamsik has the ill reputation of performing well in the small games only to disappear in the bigger games. Liverpool are a side who have to be always on the top of their game to mount any serious challenge on teams like Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United. This tendency of Hamsik to not perform in the big games may cost Liverpool, making him unsuitable for such a top club. To add to this fact that Hamsik has played in Napoli for 7 years and it would not be easy for him to get adjusted to the new team should be taken into account by Rodgers.
