Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were thrown out of the League Cup earlier this week as a spirited Southampton side managed to beat the Reds at Anfield in the second leg of the semi-final of the competition. Joel Matip was the only outfield player on the night in the Reds squad that was a Klopp signing and with the team losing some ground at the top of the table, the manager might get tempted to get in a couple of first team stars to the club at the end of the season. This might see the manager let a few players from the club leave and one such player who is now extensively linked with an exit is the defensive midfielder Emre Can.
Having played more than 100 games for Liverpool already, Can is a senior member of the squad but has been far from impressive this season. Italian giants Juventus had scouts watching over him recently and are ready to pounce on him in the summer and here are three reasons why Jurgen Klopp should let him go and look for other options:
The German midfielder joined the club on a 4-year deal a couple of years ago and will enter the final year of his contract next season. He has been offered a new one at the start of the season but Can is yet to put pen to paper and Liverpool might risk losing him on for free if Can decides not to extend his contract before the end of the current season. At his age, he is still an attractive player and can help Liverpool in the long term but if Klopp wants to add another midfielder, he cannot risk losing Can on free and should sell him this summer rather than persuade him to sign a new deal soon.
Emre Can is a decent player who has, in the past, helped Liverpool to some crucial victories including the semi-final against Villarreal in the Europa League last season. However, the 23-year-old does not fit completely into the profile of a Jurgen Klopp player. The German manager likes his players to be quick with and without the ball and Can is neither.
He is a solid player who can sit back and provide cover for his back line while is also effective with his late bursts into the final third that make him dangerous. However, his major role is in the midfield where he is expected to take no time on the ball before setting his team on the attack. This should be his most important contribution but Can has just not shown enough promise to warrant a regular place in the midfield of the side.
Though the transfer market does not provide too many options for many positions in the summer, Jurgen Klopp has a number of star players in mind at the end of the season. The likes of William Carvalho, Mahmoud Dahoud, and a few others are already on the radar of the English outfit and are also ready to move in the summer.
Klopp will surely have to spend big but he can fund a big move with the sale of Emre Can at the end of the season. Juventus are ready to pay big for his services and Klopp might be able to get a replacement that can help Liverpool become stronger for the rest of the season.
