Three Players Barcelona Could Sign This January To Establish A Strong Hold On The Champions League

Barcelona are in sublime form at present and are sitting at the top of the La Liga table with 51 points. Second-placed Atletico Madrid are 9 points behind, whereas their arch-rivals and defending champions Real Madrid are 19 points away. Los Blancos are merely one point ahead of 5th-placed Villarreal and have not been in good form in the Champions League either. They face PSG next and at present, it seems highly unlikely for them to come out with a win. However, the Catalans seem solid enough to go far in the elite European competition this time and perhaps even win it.

Ernesto Valverde has already made a hefty January signing by snapping up Philippe Coutinho’s services. That said, there are still some areas where the club could use some reinforcements. Since they paid a sum estimated to be £142m for him, it is likely that Barcelona will now look for more economical options. To be fair, they already have a strong team but here are three players Valverde could consider signing to help them establish a strong hold on the Champions League.

Dayot Upamecano – RB Leipzig

The 19-year-old central defender keeps getting better with time and could prove to be quite a coup if Barcelona did manage to land him this January. Although his main position lies in the heart of the defence, Upamecano can also play as a defensive midfielder.

With Javier Mascherano’s future uncertain and Thomas Vermaelen’s tryst with injuries, Valverde is likely to be scouting the market for a backup option to Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti. The duo has proven to be solid enough but with challenges set to intensify hereafter, having a player like Upamecano could make all the difference.

Ferran Torres – Valencia

Barcelona have been linked with the young winger and signing him could prove to be a resourceful move. Torres has attracted a lot of attention ever since he made his debut for the Spanish side this season. An out-and-out attacker, Torres is known to provide energetic displays up front and signing him would most certainly be a good piece of business. It will act as a long-term option and would also prove to be a massive opportunity for the youngster to take the next step.

Mauro Icardi – Inter Milan

Now, this might be an ambitious option but how can any club not want Icardi? Having scored 18 goals in 20 Serie A appearances this season, the 24-year-old is being viewed as one of the most exciting striking prospects across Europe. He has been consistently firing for the Italian side and as one might expect, he won’t come cheap. However, signing him could significantly boost Barcelona’s forces at the front. Luis Suarez did struggle with scoring goals initially and a player like Icardi could prove to be a massive upgrade.
