Why Lee Erwin Should Leave Leeds United This Summer

Scottish forward Lee Erwin looks set to leave Leeds United this summer having been labelled not required by new boss Thomas Christiansen. The former Motherwell striker will miss the club’s pre-season tour in Austria and remain in Yorkshire to thrash out a deal elsewhere. Erwin did indeed score a couple of times in the pre-season friendlies but was not in the team when Leeds played at North Ferriby and has been told that he will not be given many opportunities in the forthcoming Championship season.

The 23-year-old, in what looked like a dream move to Elland Road from Motherwell in 2015, failed to really cement a place in their match day squads. He was sent out on loan to Oldham Athletic last season in League One, scoring 10 goals for the Latics in 40 games and those stats have done nothing to change Christansen’s mind on the player.

Erwin’s contract at Leeds runs until next summer but in fairness, the club aren’t allowing him to leave in order to fetch some sort of transfer fee. They paid nothing for the striker in terms of an official fee and they are letting him go to simply make room in their squad for players that they feel are capable of helping them achieve promotion to the Premier League.

So far, interest in Erwin has centred around four clubs according to the media; League one sides Walsall, Charlton Athletic, MK Dons and newly-promoted Plymouth Argyle.

If Erwin wants to actually carry on having a proper career, then he cannot afford to dig his heels in at Leeds. No Championship opportunities will come his way this season and playing under-23 football in front of three men and a dog does nothing for an ego, let alone a career.

In terms of which of the four clubs he should go to; well, it’s anyone’s guess at that level who will shine next term. All are south of where he has been playing his football to date, and represent a new chapter. But if I were to make a suggestion, why not Charlton?

If you need to make a big move in life then it may as well be in London. Charlton, unlike Plymouth or Walsall (with all due respect), have a Premier League past, as well as ambitions to be back in the Championship. So they look like the best of the four from where I am sitting.
