Middlesbrough Opinion: Luis Advincula’s quality will boost Boro’s defence

Middlesbrough’s season has certainly helped them attain plaudits from a large part of the footballing world. At the same time, another part of this fan base is against the way their season has gone.

Currently, in a respectable 5th place, they are already 9 points behind Norwich at the top of the table. Pushing for the title at this stage would certainly be a long-shot.

They are only 3 points behind West Brom in 4th place, with the Baggies having played a game more than Boro this campaign. So far, they have conceded 24 goals this season and while that is an excellent record, the fact that they have scored just 38 during this time is concerning.

There is no lack for talented players in the Boro ranks but the problem seems to be the lack of depth they possess in certain positions. Rajiv Van La Parra and veteran Stuart Downing remain their only realistic winger options.

Another position that needs reinforcing is right-back. Ryan Shotton, 30, remains to be their only recognised right-back which is concerning for a team hoping to play Premier League football next season.

Centre-back Dael Fry has been utilised in the right-back role whenever Shotton was unavailable, leaving Boro with just two recognised centre-backs to choose from. This is a dilemma that Tony Pulis needs to solve before the start of next season.

An experienced player who would suit their style of play while also being relatively cheap should be their primary aim. To that end, Rayo Vallecano right-back Luis Advincula would be the perfect man to come in and do the job at Boro.

He is a 28-year-old Peruvian international right-back who is quite a pacy customer. He has had an extremely illustrious playing career already and the experience he has gained from the La Liga and the Bundesliga will certainly come to his aid in England.

His movement and crossing will be the main points of attraction and the fact that he plays for Mexican club Tigres UANL and is currently on loan at Rayo, makes the possibility of luring him to England even higher.

The Peruvian has made 22 La Liga appearances for Rayo this season and scored a goal during his impressive spell in Spain too. With 70 caps for Peru under his belt, this move would make complete sense for both parties and must be completed at the earliest.
