This 20-year-old PSG sensation is capable of being the ultimate solution to Southampton’s full-back woes – opinion

Southampton Opinion: Will Colin Dagba be a good fit for the Saints?

According to a report from the Daily Echo, Southampton had a loan offer turned down by Paris Saint-Germain for defender Colin Dagba in the January transfer window.

Colin Dagba, 20, has made five appearances in Ligue 1 and was also included in the matchday squad for PSG’s Champions League victory over Manchester United last week at Old Trafford by manager Thomas Tuchel.

As it transpired, Tuchel had no interest in letting the young full-back leave the club for Southampton last month. However, Southampton must reignite their interest in Colin Dagba once the transfer window re-opens.

Southampton are fighting tooth and nail under Ralph Hasenhuttl to avoid relegation from the Premier League. Even though the Saints have improved and have got some positive results since the appointment of Hasenhuttl, they still remain in the relegation zone.

Ralph Hasenhuttl

What has been most impressing to watch is the way the Southampton players have responded to Hasenhuttl, even if the results haven’t quite gone their way. The Austrian manager has instilled a fighting spirit in the team, given the players a lot of confidence as well as freedom and promoted youth in a short period of time.

Young guns like Yan Valery and Callum Slattery have profited the most under the tutelage of Hasenhuttl, with the former making 12 Premier League appearances this season. Valery has made the right-back position his own following the departure of Cedric Soares to Inter Milan in January. And if Inter sign Cedric permanently, Hasenhuttl will only be left with the young Valery.

And while Hasenhuttl clearly trusts Valery, Southampton are in need of defensive reinforcements and a right-back should be a key target in summer. To put things into perspective, the Saints make a move for the highly-rated Colin Dagba.

Just like Valery, Dagba is also a promising, energetic and young full-back, who can play on either side of the defence. He has progressed really well through the PSG academy since moving from Boulogne in 2016. Hence, it wasn’t a surprise to see the French champions keep hold of the youngster in January.

Conclusion

Getting regular first-team football at Southampton won’t be a problem for Dagba as he will compete with Valery for the right-back spot.

It will be tough for the Saints to sign the young Frenchman this summer if he is back in favour at PSG, however, Hasenhuttl should definitely make an attempt to get his icy hands on Dagba ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
