The 3 biggest results from the Premier League this weekend

Share

Manchester City and Liverpool continued their excellent starts to the 2018-19 Premier League season, whilst both Chelsea and Arsenal both lost ground on the leaders.

It was a good weekend for many clubs at the bottom of the table, with Cardiff City and Newcastle United both picking up three points whilst several others took a point.

Here are the three most important results of the weekend:

Manchester City 3-1 Manchester United

Manchester City made it 10 wins from 12 to start their title defence with a convincing win in the Manchester derby. David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan scored the goals for Pep Guardiola’s side who maintained their two-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the table.

Anthony Martial scored a consolation from the penalty spot for the visitors in what was Manchester United’s only shot on target all game. The two sides were miles apart in class and now the gap between the two has been extended to 12 points – you can write off Jose Mourinho’s side winning the title for another season. Gone are the days of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and co. United fans can relive memories of the Portuguese superstar at ronaldo7.net to reminisce about good times.

Liverpool 2-0 Fulham

Jurgen Klopp’s side produced a professional display in the Sunday lunchtime kick-off as Liverpool ran out 2-0 victors over bottom of the league Fulham. This keeps the Reds within two points of leaders Manchester City, whilst moving two points ahead of Chelsea, who drew 0-0 at home to Everton. With Arsenal dropping points at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, it means that Liverpool now have a six-point lead over the team in fifth.

Down at the bottom of the table and Fulham are starting to fall adrift. Slavisa Jokanovic’s side are now three points from safety and with an inferior goal difference. The Cottagers have already conceded six more goals than any other side after 12 games. Wins for Cardiff and Newcastle helped them pull away from the drop zone, whilst Huddersfield Town and Southampton each picked up a point to move a little further ahead of Fulham.

Cardiff City 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

Cardiff City picked up their second win of the campaign with Sol Bamba’s last-minute winner in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off. Though replays show the centre-back was in an offside position. Brighton & Hove Albion can also feel harshly done by Dale Stephens’ straight red card in the first half.

Three points for the Bluebirds move them onto eight for the season and only in the relegation zone on goal difference. Victories at home to bottom half sides will be crucial for Neil Warnock’s men if they are to avoid relegation at the first hurdle.
