With Liverpool recently being linked with a move for the young Spaniard – Cristian Tello, we weigh up three reasons why or why not they should place a bid for him in January
Liverpool hasn’t been a place where wingers thrive in recent years, as Oussama Assaidi and Stewart Downing have failed, and they have also signed striker Fabio Borini to play-out wide, even though he is very much a central striker. Daniel Sturridge often starts as a winger but drops into the centre more than he should, though with 9 Premier League goals this season it is doubtful there will be many complaints about that. Tello would bring the extra bit of quality Liverpool need out wide to keep themselves in the hunt for a top four place, and as Rodgers deploys a more European style than most Premier League clubs, the transition should be seamless. Tello is also a good playmaker. Whoscored player database shows that his pass accuracy is 89.2 % and he also got 2 assists in 7 La Liga games.
It has now almost become a business in football to sign young talent, keep them for a few seasons and then ship them off to one of Europe’s elite for a large transfer fee, in fact, clubs like Udinese and Granada have been set up for that purpose alone. Tello has a lot of potential and he is yet to show it all for Barcelona, and he is currently not getting enough game time to fully develop himself, so should liverpool can pick him for cheaper fee, in two or three seasons they may get double or triple that figure, should they be looking to sell.
Although there is no doubt that Liverpool could do with another winger in January, after the 3-1 loss to Hull with Daniel Sturridge missing, Liverpool need more depth up-front, as summer signing Iago Aspas has still not quite adapted to the more physical and negative Premier League opposition, such as the Tigers. With Liverpool also recently linked with Jay Rodriguez, he would be a more suitable signing to Tello, and with interest also shown by Napoli and Fiorentina for the Barcelona winger, it is unlikely they will win that race. Instead of Tello, the signing of Swansea’s Michu would be a better move for Rodgers.
