Strongest Possible Manchester United (4-2-3-1) Line Up To Face Stoke City: Mata Out, Fellaini In

Defence – Young, Smalling, Jones, Blind.

Chris Smalling

It was a shocker for the United defence against the Canaries last time out, with Phil Jones looking out of his depth. Louis van Gaal would expect a better showing from his back four, which is expected to remain unchanged, thanks to the lack of options at the back.

Midfield – Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Herrera, Rooney, Depay.

Morgan Schneiderlin has been rock solid in his central defensive role, albeit with a lack of invention in his passing. With Michael Carrick enduring a tough time against Norwich, Van Gaal might play the Frenchman alongside Marouane Fellaini in central midfield just to add a bit of power and stability in the centre of the park.

Ander Herrera worked brilliantly in a free role in midfield last season, and the Spaniard could be asked to tuck in on the right side in place of the out of form Juan Mata. Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay should play in the middle and left respectively in an interesting looking attacking midfield threesome.

Striker -Anthony Martial

The Frenchman scored United’s consolation goal against Norwich City but has yet to rediscover his early season form. With goals difficult to come by for United, they need their front line striker to get back to his best.
