Should Liverpool Show The Exit Door For The 21-Year Old Midfielder?

Share

Liverpool have been making the best business of the transfer season so far and have already roped in the likes of Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Sunderland Keeper Simon Mignolet to strengthen their side. But all these player have made the position of some other players of the club vulnerable and now Liverpool have started thinking about offloading a couple of players to generate some funds and reduce their squad size.

Brendan Rodgers has already sold out of favour striker Andy Carroll to West Ham for a respectable sum, which is rumoured to be around £15m. It is a highly debatable subject as to whether the likes of  Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson should be sold or not as they have shown glimpses of improvement in the previous season, but still it may not be enough for them to be associated with the club on a longer run.

However, one player who definitely seems to be heading out of the club is Jonjo Shelvey. The England U21 who signed a long term contract with the club just the previous season has now found himself as the subject of speculation about an exit. With Liverpool’s acquisition of more attacking options, Shelvey’s playing time is certain to get diminished.

It is true that Jonjo Shelvey cannot be written off as an untalented player, incapable of playing in a big club. On the contrary, he has really shown glimpses of promise on the field, displaying an impressive work rate. For one thing is that the player is just 21-years of age, and has all the possibilities of getting better in the future. He is a player who would like to be near the ball in the midfield and who does not shy away from making challenges at the opponents.

But on the hindsight, Liverpool would not benefit with a player such as Shelvey in their team considering the depth and quality that’s there (and that might be arriving). He has featured in only 28 matches for the Merseyside club the previous season and the propositions look even worse for him this time around. He probably cannot replace captain Gerrard in the central midfield, reducing his chances to be in the side only as an attacking option. But with the likes of Coutinho, Aspas, Alberto, Sturridge in the side, with Sterling and Suso on the bench, it is extremely difficult for Shelvey to fit in.

Thus, if Liverpool get the right kind of money for him from Norwich or Swansea, he can be asked to part ways with the club, a step which would benefit both the parties involved.
