Liverpool kept their winning start in the league going by scrapping past Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane.
Georginio Wijnaldum scored the only goal of a game that was fought till the last second, with the home side playing more than a part to hassle the European champions.
After a good start to the game by Jurgen Klopp’s men, they became sloppy and allowed Sheffield United to defend well and hit them on the counter-attacks.
However, the first big chance of the game fell to Sadio Mane after a fantastic long ball from Virgil van Dijk. The Senegal international controlled the pass well but had a proper miss-kick after that with only keeper Dean Henderson to beat.
The aforementioned Liverpool forward had another glorious chance to score just before half-time after he was fed in by Roberto Firmino. This time, he hit the post much to the relief around Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United began the second half well and had a chance to score, but John Fleck’s goal-bound shot was heroically blocked by Andy Robertson to preserve Liverpool’s clean sheet.
It was in the 70th minute when the away side took the lead through some stroke of luck. Wijnaldum’s volleyed attempt was good but straight at the keeper Henderson. But, somehow the Manchester United loanee let it slip under his grabs without any pressure.
Mohamed Salah had the opportunity to kill the game off but the Blades’ keeper showed great resilience to make a fine stop and keep his team in the game till the final whistle.
All in all, a grafty win for Liverpool, who were probably mediocre today and still came away with important three points.
