Liverpool are set to move yet again in the transfer window with Swedish left-back Ludwig Augustinsson being linked with a move to the Premier League club. The 21-year-old, a Sweden international would be the club’s 7th signing in the transfer window if they can complete the Nathaniel Clyne signing from Southampton.
Ludwig has been almost fast tracked into the Sweden team and at only 21, would have a lot of time to develop and play for Liverpool, but who is the left-back?
From injuries to the best left-back in Sweden
Ludwig was born in a family of athletes and it was no surprise that he joined IF Brommapojkarna at the age of 6 for the club in Stockholm. He then moved to one of the larger clubs in Sweden to IFK Göteborg in 2013 and this is where he started to show what he really is capable of.
The young defender played 28 league games in 2013 and was also voted into the Allsvenskan’s team of the year in 2014 as the best left-back. It was this great performance that saw him sign for Danish club FC Copenhagen in January 2015 and was the most expensive wing-back ever to be brought from Sweden.
He has been one of the best players at the Danish club as well, having earned high praise from his teammates. One of his greatest attributes is his engine and stamina, during that 28 game run for his earlier club, Ludwig was not substituted even once. He has a knack for attacking as well and can cover up distance really quickly which would be a great asset for any player in the Premier League.
Augustinsson does have one issue though, he is extremely left-footed and doesn’t really have a lot of ability with the right but he can play down the wing for Liverpool as well, he can switch with the winger and that would be ideal for Liverpool. The club does have a youngster in Alberto Moreno who did decently for the club last season but was often caught out by some of the best attackers in the Premier League.
Ludwig would probably alternate with Moreno and provide him some rest and recuperation time, would Ludwig be the first choice left-back at Liverpool if he were to sign? Probably not but Rodgers does have a great track record of developing young talent and that could be the deal clincher for Ludwig if he wants to continue his growth at a larger club.
