Rangers could complete an outstanding deal if they sign this 34-year-old free agent soon

Why Rangers must quickly snap up free agent Darren Bent

Darren Bent has revealed that he “100 per cent” wants to join former England team-mate Steven Gerrard at Rangers, reports the Sun.

Bent is looking for a new club after being released by Derby County at the end of last season. The 34-year-old has been training with Burton Albion, having spent the second half of last season on loan at the League One side.

Rangers signed free agent defender Gareth McAuley and going by the challenges Gerrard will be facing in the upcoming months, further additions cannot be ruled out. One area the Gers could still strengthen is the attack, despite the signing of Kyle Lafferty.

Gerrard could do a world of good by snapping up free agent Darren Bent as quickly as possible. The Rangers manager already has the likes of Kyle Lafferty, Alfredo Morelos and the young Umar Sadiq at his disposal but there is always room for improvement.

Bent has certainly regressed with age, however, he could be a shrewd short-term option to have in the squad.

He is clearly past his prime but he will have more to offer than just scoring goals for the Ibrox outfit. He has been a phenomenal goalscorer down the years, racking up 179 goals in England. The ex-England international would add depth to the attacking ranks whilst also bringing bags of experience to Gerrard’s side.

At 34, Bent might not be as mobile as he once was but he has been a reliable goalscorer throughout his career. He clearly knows where the back of the net is and having the veteran Englishman’s experience and know-how of the game is vital.

Morelos is developing at a rapid rate but he is still young, while Sadiq is waiting for the opportunity to showcase his talent to Gerrard. As Morelos and Sadiq are young, a player of Bent’s quality and experience in the dressing room would be of so much help for their development.

Furthermore, Bent’s aggressive and physical style would make him a perfect fit for the Scottish Premiership.

Bent has entered the final stages of his career but he is certainly not finished. And considering everything, Gerrard must quickly snap up Bent to add more firepower to his attack. On a free transfer, the former England international would represent a fantastic piece of business for Rangers.
