Opinion – Liverpool’s decision to snub a £100m summer move for this former star will bear fruits

Liverpool’s decision not to sign Philippe Coutinho was a smart move

Most of Liverpool’s rivals were busy making big-money signings in the transfer window.

Tottenham bought Tanguy Ndombele, Arsenal signed Nicolas Pepe, Manchester City got Rodri and Manchester United got Harry Maguire.

Liverpool, on the other hand, didn’t make any big moves and only signed three players. Two of them are teenagers while Adrian is a 32-year-old goalkeeper.

Adrian

None of them seems set to feature in the first-team straight-away, but the Telegraph claims that the Reds snubbed a move for an old boy.

Philippe Coutinho struggled at Barcelona in the previous campaign and was available in the summer. The Telegraph reports that the Reds turned down a chance to sign the former Red but the package would have been an incredible £100million.

The Reds, instead, opted to spend that money on contract extensions (h/t Telegraph). Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all penned new deals in recent months.

The future looks bright even without Coutinho

Nabbing the Brazilian could have made for a great transfer window, as the Reds lacked goals from the midfield last season.

However, the Reds have Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back after a long time out with a knee problem.

Should Naby Keita and Adam Lallana remain fit for the entire campaign, we would have seven midfielders fighting for three spots in the first-team.

Further, tying down the stars from the previous campaign to long-term deals is great for the future. Most of our first-teamers are hitting the prime of their careers and should improve further under Jurgen Klopp.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Alexander-Arnold and Gomez are still a few years from even reaching their prime, and are already two of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Signing Coutinho could have led to dressing room problems too, especially after he left Liverpool mid-season to join Barcelona.

The Reds are a well-oiled machine that has improved each year under Klopp, and there is no reason why they would not do the same this season too.

Klopp also signed two teenagers, who should feature in the first-team soon, while the Reds have promoted Rhian Brewster.

The English striker is another one with a bright future, and it will be interesting to see how he performs once the season starts.

Spending that £100m on one player would have been great, but keeping hold of the talent at the club is a decision that will pay-off for several years.
