Liverpool Opinion: Reds must offload dead-weight Alberto Moreno

Liverpool haven’t always had a special bond with the Spanish League as they seem to always opt for players in the other European leagues as is seen in their transfers.

Considering that Liverpool are one of the most followed and loved clubs in the world, it comes as quite a surprise that they’ve made no signings from the Spanish League in the past 4 years.

Alberto Moreno

The last two marquee players they signed from the La Liga were Alberto Moreno and Iago Aspas and they both flopped quite badly at Liverpool. While the latter has made a name for himself at Celta Vigo, Alberto Moreno is still a Liverpool player, despite not featuring very often.

Moreno was brought in from Sevilla in the summer of 2014 at the age of 21. Despite having a pretty good shot at nailing down the starting role at Anfield in his first couple of seasons at the club, he wasn’t able to impress the Reds faithful.

He often looked uncomfortable with the ball at his feet while the pressure of defending a flank in a league as dynamic as the English top-flight was clearly beyond his prerequisite skill-set.

He was known for his erratic performances in the Reds shirt as he was never able to convince the Kop of his talents. As time wore on, he slowly became a forgotten man.

This season, Andy Robertson’s rise to supremacy has diminished Moreno’s chances of a Liverpool return. Reports from The Mirror are suggesting that the Spaniard could make a switch to the Serie A at the end of the season when his current contract expires.

It is also claimed in the report that he was in Rome during the recent international break and had a meeting with the staff at Italian outfit Lazio, expressing his interest in making the switch and possibly signing a pre-contract agreement.

Joe Gomez’s versatility added to the resurgence of Robertson means that Moreno’s chances would be extremely limited from here on. After all, he has only played in 5 games in all competitions this season.

Overall, Moreno is a talented player but after 141 games for the Reds, the time is right for him to move on and reignite his career.

Given the current situation, his departure would certainly be in the best interest of both parties involved, which is why Jurgen Klopp must offload him in the summer.
