Liverpool FC Opinion: Why should Liverpool turn their attention toward Lyon’s Houssem Aouar?

Jurgen Klopp-led Liverpool had one of their most historical runs the last term, bagging the Champions League trophy in the end.

Now, they are gearing up for their next season with the same confidence but their objective certainly would be to win the elusive Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp

As far as the current transfer window has fared, the Reds are yet to make their impression but it is safe to say that they don’t need any alterations to the current squad.

If there is an area that needs to be scrutinized by the German manager, it has to be the midfield unit which is currently filled with ageing and unstable midfielders.

Liverpool’s midfielders were a cut below the rest when compared to the other top Premier League clubs in the previous season.

From the injury-prone Naby Keita to the industrious James Milner, who is also in the twilight of his career, none of the midfielders proved to be consistent.

While midfield reinforcements are desperate at the moment, they can resume their interest in Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, who was linked with a move to Anfield in the past. (h/t Metro)

He has been on the transfer radar of Manchester City as well, the Reds’ title rivals from last season, and it is the right time for Klopp to make a move for the midfielder.

Aouar’s staggering rise to prominence at Lyon

An academy graduate of the Ligue 1 outfit, Aouar broke into the main team at the age of 19 and has been a regular since then.

In the 2018/19 campaign, then-manager Bruno Genesio extracted the best out of the French midfielder, who ended up bagging 7 goals and 11 assists. It goes without saying that those are eye-catching numbers for a player who is described as a defensive midfielder.

Aouar is credited with his all-round abilities and creativity, though he starts as one of the double pivots under Genesio.

With tricky dribbling skills as his major weapon, the French U21 star doesn’t shy away from being in both attacking and defensive situations.

Statistically, the Frenchman’s numbers turned out to be impressive as he averaged 1.6 dribbles while holding an average of 1 .7 tackles and 1 interception per game, thus balancing between the attack and the defence rightfully.

Notably, he averaged around 2 shots per game in 31 Ligue appearances – another clear evidence of his contribution in the attacking third.

Aouar – the right man for the Reds

Klopp’s counter-pressing style of play would certainly fit the Lyon midfielder, who uses his build and pace to greater use.

Aouar could be deployed as one of the pivots alongside Fabinho if Klopp decides to use the 4-2-3-1 formation. Otherwise, the French prospect can be used as a central midfielder on the left side, which is a position he is familiar with.

Final Verdict

Klopp must plan for a future without players like Wijnaldum and Milner should the Reds wants to re-establish their reign in England’s top-flight.

Paving way for the youngsters like Aouar, who offers multiple solutions, is what the Reds have to do now.
