The Premier league was back in action this weekend, while everyone was pleased to finally see some of the best footballers in action, some fans might have been a little disappointed by the final result in some games. Chelsea and Arsenal fans might be thinking this game week could have been a little blimp as both teams failed to secure a win.

Liverpool fans were happy to see the back of Stoke City, especially thanks to a thunderbolt from Coutinho, while Manchester United and Manchester City registered opening day wins but in varying levels of difficulty. Everyone would be talking about the great performance by Yaya Toure, who looks ready to take Manchester City to the top of the Premier League all over again. We list out the five players who stood head and shoulders above the rest and starred in this first game week.

Yaya Toure

The big Ivorian wasn’t up to the task last year but this season, he has started with a bang. Sure Manchester City played against West Bromwich Albion but you beat what is in front of you and Toure put on a dominating performance. The powerful midfielder scored twice against the team from the midlands and his second goal was one of the best of the game week. If Toure continues playing like this, the Premier League title could be heading back to the blue half of Manchester.

Vincent Kompany

Speaking of blue, Yaya Toure’s teammate, Vincent Kompany was just as good as the Ivorian if not better. Another player who wasn’t ta his best last season Kompany displayed great strength and defensive ability in dealing with the likes of Lambert in the game. He notched up a great performance with a goal to boot. This could be Manchester City’s year if both players play up to their ability.

Riyad Mahrez

Currently leading the Premier League goal scoring charts, Mahrez might not stay in that position at the end of the season but the Algerian winger was one of the stars in the first game week of the Premier League. Mahrez was a thorn in Sunderland’s side and constantly threatened to score, he did score twice though and could have done a lot more damage to the Black Cats. Mahrez’s performances would decide the fate of Leicester and based on this performance, they have nothing to worry about at all.

Yohan Cabaye

The former Newcastle and PSG midfielder had a great debut for Crystal Palace, not that it is any surprise, Cabaye was reunited with his former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace and it doesn’t seem that Cabaye was ever away from the English game. He completed the scoring in the 3-1 victory of Palace over Norwich with a neat finish. This season could help the Frenchman prove to all his doubters that he really is one of the best midfielders in the world, after a couple of rather poor seasons.

Marc Albrighton

Another surprise inclusion in the list but Albrighton is there on merit and his display against a hapless Sunderland side. The former Aston Villa winger set up two goals for Leicester City before he scored by a well-placed turn to give his team the fourth goal of the game. He probably had the best display from all the players in the league and certainly was a dream for those who chose him in their FPL team.
