Everton vs Sheffield United report: Everton match report

A first-half own goal by Yerry Mina and a late Lys Mousset effort gave Sheffield United a smash-and-grab 2-0 win at Everton on Saturday. Marco Silva’s side slumped to a third defeat in four league games as they were second best all afternoon against their spirited opponents.

Everton dominated the opening half, with Richarlison curling a fine shot inches wide before visiting goalkeeper Dean Henderson kept out a stinging low drive by Lucas Digne.

But the Blades took the lead completely against the run of play with five minutes remaining of the first half. From their first corner of the match, Oliver Norwood’s corner delivery was bundled into his own net by defender Yerry Mina. Despite the home side’s appeals for a suspected foul on Jordan Pickford and after a VAR check, the goal was given.

Everton pressed after the break in search of an equaliser but Chris Wilder’s United very well organised in defence and made it difficult for the hosts to create any major openings.

Despite registering 16 shots at goal, the Toffees fell behind to the visitors’ second and final effort in the 79th-minute. John Lundstrum played a fantastic defence-splitting past for substitute Lys Mousset, who finished with aplomb past Pickford.

Marco Silva threw Theo Walcott in a desperate attempt to salvage something but United held out comfortably in the last 10 minutes to register a memorable victory at Goodison Park.
