Manchester United Transfer Window Analysis: Midfield Bulked Up But Strikers Are Missing

Manchester United Transfer Window Analysis

Manchester United supporters must be wondering what their club is going through, not only are they not playing football that is the Manchester United way but the transfer dealings of Louis van Gaal aren’t making much sense. They did do well to hold onto David de Gea for now but he probably will end up at Real Madrid next season on a free transfer.

The club recently signed Anthony Martial for a whopping £36 million, this would certainly have raised some eyebrows as not much is known about the striker who is moving from Monaco. We look at the transfer dealings of the Red Devils so far this season and analyse just how good or bad it has been for the club, only the big name signings are looked into in this article.

Players in:

Anthony Martial, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay, Sergio Romero

Players out:

Angel Di Maria, Chicharito, Jonny Evans, Robin Van Persie, Nani, Rafael, Falcao, Tom Cleverly

Manchester United’s squad has been taken apart once again this time by Louis van Gaal, while last season didn’t see a lot of activities, this time around it has been a completely different transfer window. The start of the window saw the signing of one of the most exciting players, Memphis Depay. They also signed Sergio Romero, who was seen to be the player to replace David de Gea but the Spaniard has stuck around with United thanks to the English club’s persistence on not selling him.

Manchester United have revamped their team and certainly have bulked up their midfield with the signing of Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger, who are expected to provide the club with a lot of bite in that region of the field. The other signing which seems to be a real bargain is that of Matteo Darmian, he seems to be the one player who seems to be playing in top gear from the first game of the season.

The worry for Manchester United fans is that they haven’t bought for positions which have been weakened this season. They have required a top striker to play with Wayne Rooney and with the departures of Chicharito, Van Persie and Falcao, United not buying a top quality striker could come back to haunt them. Martial might be an exciting prospect but he hasn’t delivered in Ligue 1 either and expecting him to set the Premier League alight is a little too much to ask from a 19-year-old.

The other region where Manchester United needed a few players is the centre of defence, Jonny Evans also left the club and as we have seen, playing Daley Blind in a centre back role is not the right way to go for Manchester United.

The club might have spent a lot of money this season but they could have bought well for a couple of positions, will this come back to haunt Louis van Gaal, especially in a season where they have the added games of the Champions League? We will have to see.
