Manchester City opinion: Should the Cityzens sign Hermoso?

According to a report from Daily Star, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is interested in bringing Espanyol defender Mario Hermoso to the Etihad next season.

The Spanish centre-back is cited as an alternative for long-time target Harry Maguire, who will cost City a lot of bucks. However, the Cityzens have to act quickly as La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are in advanced talks regarding the signing of Hermoso.

Hermoso, 24, had a great season with the Catalan club, appearing for more than 30 games with a three-goal tally. And his string of good performances helped him earn his first international cap, becoming the defence partner of captain Sergio Ramos.

Prior to the Espanyol switch, Hermoso played for Real Madrid, where he spent his youth career and later played for Castilla, their reserves side. The Spanish centre-back is tied with the club until the end of next season

City need defensive reinforcements – here is why Hermoso will be a perfect fit

The Skyblues are being forced to look for a solid centre-back as a result of Vincent Kompany’s departure.

The Foxes defender, Maguire, looks a great option, citing his Premier League experience yet his price tag remains a major concern. Instead, the Premier League winners should opt for Hermoso, who is currently brimming with confidence.

As far as the previous season is concerned, Hermoso held a pass success percentage of 83% and grabbed three man of the matches awards- a testimony to why he was called up by Luis Enrique for international duty.

In addition to that, the 24-year-old is great at winning the aerial duels and has made an average of 5.6 clearances per game in La Liga. He played a massive hand in Diego Lopez keeping 10 clean sheets, the eighth highest in the league, beating the likes of the Los Blancos.

Verdict

Hermoso comes with a price tag of £40million and it would be smart business should the Cityzens try to seal his move, beating Atletico in the race. The Spaniard is more familiar with Guardiola’s possession-based style of play, which will make him adapt to the Premier League very quickly.
