Is This Liverpool Star Worth The Captain’s Armband?

Share

When you think of Liverpool, the first name that comes to most people’s minds is Steven Gerrard. Gerrard – an inspirational and legendary captain is always remembered by fans and players as one of Liverpool’s greatest.  But his departure at the end of the 2014/15 season has left a void in the team and has not been filled yet. Considering his position, Liverpool have found good replacements in Emre Can and Jordan Henderson but as a captain, Liverpool still haven’t found a proper replacement.

Jordan Henderson was given the vice captain’s role in Gerrard’s last season at Liverpool. After Gerrard’s departure, Henderson was made the captain and coming into the new 2015/16 season, he was expected to show his worth. But unfortunately, he was riddled with injuries throughout the season and could hardly give any impressive performances. There were a few matches in which Henderson the captain was impressive. For example, in Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Man United in the league, Henderson did all he could to keep the players motivated but luck wasn’t on Liverpool’s side that day. On the contrary, in the League Cup final against Manchester City, he was outspoken by players on the pitch and did not look commanding. Now the question that arises is: should Liverpool change their captain? If yes, then who will succeed Henderson?

Emre Can, Lucas Leiva and Dejan Lovren are some names that have come up in the list for potential leaders, if Klopp wishes to change his captain. Lucas’ future at the club is uncertain so he is not a contender for the captain’s armband. Emre Can is quite young to take up the responsibility. Hence these two will surely not be in contention for the captain’s armband. A surprise in that list is Dejan Lovren.

Dejan Lovren has come back to life under Klopp. On comparison with his time under Brendan Rodgers, his performances have improved drastically since Klopp took over. After a very tough first season at Liverpool, things seemed bad for Lovren. But Klopp, using his magic wand, seems to have worked some spell on Lovren. Lovren shows his passion in every game, keeps the back four well organised and is never afraid to make his voice heard. But should he be made the captain? Lovren was given the captain’s role during his time at Southampton. And he was quite impressive. But at Liverpool he should not be given the captain’s role next season. The pressure will be very high and he might crumble under it. And if that happens, it would be a disaster for Liverpool, because he is Liverpool’s first choice centre back. He will be very vital in the team’s defense next season and the captain’s role can affect his performance.

Klopp should not change his captain, at least for next season. After one season, he will have an idea whether he needs a new captain or not. And if he does wish to change the captain next season, James Milner is a very good option but Lovren should not be given the captain’s role.
