Liverpool signing this world-class defensive wall would make them an unbeatable unit next season

Liverpool opinion: Should the Reds make a move for Matthijs De Ligt?

Liverpool need new players in the summer. That fact is a given and that should not be a reflection on their season or their current crop of stars. The likes of Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno, Nathaniel Clyne, Connor Randall and a few others are not good enough.

However, selling them without adding a few replacements will hurt the Reds in the future. To be able to compete against Manchester City on multiple fronts, Liverpool needs depth in their squad and that is something that they do not have.

It’s why they were knocked out of the FA Cup and the EFL Cup far too early, giving the Cityzens a clear shot at a quadruple. If it wasn’t for Tottenham, Pep Guardiola and company would be on their way towards unprecedented success.

However, the sheer fact that Liverpool are still in the Premier League and the Champions League shows just how well they’ve played. But if they want to continue that success, they’ll need another superstar.

That’s exactly why the Mirror has reported that Liverpool are back in the race for Netherlands superstar Matthijs De Ligt. Amongst the top-five or even top-ten defenders in the world, the 19-year-old starlet has been absolutely phenomenal and a crucial presence in Ajax’s side.

The club captain, it shows just how much faith the Eredivisie giants have in their young starlet.

It also shows his leadership quality and maturity. His maturity is miles above that of others at his age, and things will only improve going forward for the centre-back.

For Liverpool however, signing him will effectively ensure their future for the next decade at the very least.

It will also make their back-line close to unbeatable with Virgil van Dijk already there. It’s a combination that Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman uses time after time and they are yet to let him down.

Somehow despite the difference in their age, the two have created a telepathic link between themselves and that has been the core of this Dutch team. If Liverpool somehow manage to snag the other half, there is no telling what they can achieve.

Conclusion

Matthijs De Ligt is one for the future and his performances of late have also made him a must-have centre-back for any club in the world. His future is very bright and Liverpool need to take full advantage of that.

The core of their current side is not getting any younger and if they want to end that trophy drought, they need to start adding world-class stars.
