Why Liverpool should aim for an ambitious swoop for Emerson

Liverpool have made a terrific start to the season as they enter the festive fixtures with an unbeaten record in the league. They are second in the table behind leaders and defending champions Manchester City with a difference of just two points.

To add a more positive coat over their start, Jurgen Klopp’s men have already faced Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal away from home and have also played against City at home in the first 12 games.

Hence, to keep pace at the top after playing some tough league matches, added with the Champions League pressure, it is a job well done so far by the Reds.

While they have done terrific business in the summer transfer window to rectify their weak positions, the Merseysiders need to do a little more to really challenge on all fronts. To start with, they have to get a new left-back to support first-choice Andy Robertson.

It is being reported in the Mirror that Alberto Moreno is set to leave Anfield on a free transfer once his contract expires at the end of this season.

It means the Spaniard could be in the market in January as well, to move elsewhere on a cut-price deal. Hence, it is imperative from Liverpool’s viewpoint to sign a quality left-back who can back up Robertson whenever required and challenge for that role.

There is one full-back in the Premier League who could help the Reds in this situation – Emerson Palmieri of Chelsea. The Brazilian arrived at Stamford Bridge in the previous winter window for a fee around £17.6m.

However, he wasn’t able to get into the plans of Antonio Conte last season and is nowhere near Marcos Alonso for the first-choice role as a left-back.

As a result, the 24-year-old has had to contend with playing cup and Europa League games. Truth be told, Emerson had one good season with Roma but he hasn’t been able to keep his place as a first-choice fullback in the past either.

Maybe a manager like Jurgen Klopp would treat him differently and give more opportunities to showcase his talent. Hence, if Liverpool come calling by any chance, he should move to Anfield.

For the Reds, they must target the Brazilian and get the deal over the line as he is a quality player who will provide proper competition to Andy Robertson, making the Scot work harder than ever to keep his place in the team. That sort of fight for the spot is healthy for the team over a course of the season.
