According to a report in Daily Mail, Premier League leaders Liverpool are considering giving a new contract to striker Daniel Sturridge.
The £120,000-a-week Englishman is out of contract at the end of this season, with a host of European clubs, including Sevilla, Valencia, Monaco, Inter, AC Milan and other sides in the Chinese Super League interested. However, the Reds have no intention of allowing him to leave.
As per the report, Sturridge is still valued by manager Jurgen Klopp as the man who provides competition to his famous strike force. The player himself is determined to help Liverpool win silverware this season, including the prospect of winning the league for the first time since 1990.
Here’s why the Merseysiders should keep hold of the 29-year-old beyond next summer:
We all know about the qualities Liverpool have in their strike department, with the famous front three and Xherdan Shaqiri doing the bulk of the damage this season.
But all of that aside, having a backup is a necessity for any team that is going for trophies during a course of the season.
Though their cup chances were over with their Monday night loss to Wolves in the FA Cup, there are a lot of league games to go. With a stern Champions League clash against Bayern Munich awaiting, rotation in the right manner could be crucial if the Reds are to challenge in the league and in Europe. Hence, there must be no chance of them selling Sturridge this month.
Fast forward to the summer and the Englishman would still remain an important player just because of what he can bring to the table.
If anything is lost in memory, then it is worth reminding that it is because of Sturridge that Liverpool were unbeaten until the 3rd of January, as he scored a wonder goal at Stamford Bridge in the 88th minute to equalise against Chelsea in a game where the team looked lost after missing some gilt-edged chances.
The former Manchester City frontman always has goal-scoring moments in his locker and he doesn’t need to start the bulk of the games to make that kind of impact.
Hence, Liverpool have no option but to keep him and use him in the right way. Churning out 10 goals from a backup striker would be a bonus of a lifetime!
